Tudor Ranger watches return to their roots, featuring a new 36mm case and their first non-black dial. The modern history of the Tudor Ranger is only about a decade old, but its heritage dates back much further. Before its revival a few years ago, Ranger was the name given by Tudor, Rolex's sister brand, to its military-style Oyster Prince collection in the 1950s and 60s, watches characterized by simple, legible dials and robust movements. Early Ranger watches were 34mm in size, while the modern Ranger uses a more contemporary 39mm.
But now, to return to its roots, the Ranger has shrunk its case size to a more retro 36mm, while also introducing the first non-black dial version in the collection.
Simplified Size is Better In 2022, Tudor reissued the Ranger collection to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the British Northern Greenland Expedition, and the 39mm case size was already a step in the right direction. However, for a tool watch designed to balance the ruggedness required for adventure with everyday comfort, the 36mm size seems more appropriate. It's not the retro 34mm size of earlier models, but a compromise that fits the modern wrist without appearing overly large.
The new 36mm case retains all the advantages of the 2022 model: a full 316L brushed stainless steel case, a domed sapphire crystal, 100-meter water resistance, and the Ranger's signature utilitarian aesthetic. Tudor has kept the case thickness to 11mm (compared to 12mm for the 39mm model), resulting in a slightly different feel on the wrist. The arrow-shaped hour hand and angular second hand are retained, but the new second hand features a burgundy tip.
Desert Charm Meets Arctic Tradition Previously, the modern Ranger was only available with a black dial, but now a Dune White color option has been added. Tudor has a long-standing connection with the Dakar Rally, and this color scheme seems to pay homage to the Saudi Arabian desert. While it doesn't boast the Arctic White dial that some collectors dream of, its grainy matte finish gives it a unique look.
Instead of coating the black Arabic numerals and hour markers with luminescent material, Tudor has added small luminescent dots to the minute markers. The hands are coated with beige Super-LumiNova for visibility in low light.
However, the watchmaker hasn't completely abandoned the 39mm case diameter. Both the black and Dune White dials will be available in 36mm or 39mm case sizes, meaning you have four combinations to choose from.
Sports Matter This watch is powered by Tudor's in-house MT5400 automatic movement (the 36mm version uses the MT5402 movement, and the 39mm version uses the MT5402 movement). Both movements are COSC certified, feature a silicon hairspring, and have a daily accuracy of only -2/+4 seconds—more precise than the COSC standard—with a 70-hour power reserve.
Bracelet Options
This stainless steel bracelet features a fully brushed finish and Tudor's signature T-clasp, allowing for five-position quick adjustment within an 8mm range without tools. Another option is a fabric strap—a green strap adorned with red and beige stripes, woven by the French maker Julien Faure on a 19th-century jacquard loom. This durable strap is used throughout Tudor's entire product line. If you prefer a more casual look than the stainless steel bracelet, the fabric strap is undoubtedly a good choice.
