Dipa Karmakar will make an historic debut as Indias first female gymnast competing at an Olympic Games on Sunday night (11pm IST) at the Rio Olympic Arena. Dipa is one of 38 individual gymnasts in the womens artistic competition who will compete alongside 12 teams (of five gymnasts each) in a total field of 98 gymnasts. The women gymnasts will compete on four apparatus: the vault, balance beam, the floor and uneven bars. The four apparatus in womens gymnastics, according to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), are meant to test different physical characteristics. Vault is about speed and explosiveness, Uneven Bars upper body strength, Balance Beam balance and mental toughness, and Floor Exercise both endurance and expressiveness. In Rio, individual gymnasts like Dipa are divided into several groups, each of which is placed in a division along with four teams. The first of the divisions (sub-division 1) will begin at 6.15pm IST and the last (sub-division 5) at 5am IST on Monday, August 8.Dipa, bib No. 351, is placed in sub-division 3, which will begin its routines at 11pm IST. Her mixed group of individual gymnasts features Barbara Mokosova (Slovakia), Ana Sofia Gomez (Guatemala), Emma Larsson (Sweden) and Ti Ha Thanh Phan (Vietnam). This group has been placed alongside teams from Great Britain, Brazil and Germany who will start their Olympic qualification rounds at 11pm and go through each of the four apparatus in rotation. Dipas group - MX8 - will go through the apparatus in the following sequence: the vault, uneven bar, balance beam and floor. Each gymnast will have to perform one routine on each apparatus for approximately 90 seconds -- except the vault, where every gymnast must perform two vaults for qualification. The two vaults must, FIG rule state, be of different styles. (for example, a vault where the gymnast flips backwards onto the table and a vault where the gymnast flies forward off the springboard).Dipa is a specialist in the vault, winning a 2015 Commonwealth Games bronze, finishing fifth in the world championships vault event and winning gold in the Rio test event on the vault. Her vaults in the competition are expected to be front handspring double somersault (the Produnova) with a D-(difficulty) score points value of 7 and the Tsukahara stretched double twist (also known as the Zamolodchikova) with a D-score points value of 6. In Rio tonight, she will be fourth up on the vault after Mokosova, Gomes and Larsson. Dipas division -- comprising 20 gymnasts in all -- will go through their entire routines in around two hours.Through these routines on the four apparatus, every gymnast would be seeking qualification in at least one if not all three competitions that are on simultaneously: individual apparatus, individual all-round and team. The top 24 across all four apparatus will go through to the all-round individual final, the top eight teams into the team finals and the top eight finishers in the individual apparatus will go through to the individual apparatus final will be held on August 9 (womens team), August 11 (womens all round individual) and August 14-16 (individual apparatus finals men and women).Jim Miller Jersey .
