MUNICH - Ernie Els shot a 3-under 69 in the second round of the BMW International Open on Friday to maintain his one-stroke lead. The South African made six birdies, a double bogey and a bogey, leaving him at 12-under 132 halfway through the European Tour event. Els, a two-time winner of the British Open and U.S. Open, opened with a 63 Thursday. "Theres so much golf to be played. If you fall out of the lead, if youre not leading after three rounds, it doesnt really mean much at all late Sunday," Els said. "So you just want to stay in the race and keep trying to go forward." He is followed by Matthew Baldwin of England (69) and Alexander Levy of France (68). Defending champion Danny Willett of England shot a 65 for the days best round and is tied for fourth place with Bernd Wiesberger of Austria (68). Willett was six strokes off the pace after an opening 69 and is happy he is back in contention to become the first player to defend the title in the 25th edition of the competition. "Yesterday was a bit hit and miss, a little bit shaky," said Willett, whose season was disrupted by a back injury. "I havent played a lot of tournament golf in the past 14 weeks, so it was a bit rusty. And today I hit some proper golf shots again and I played really nicely." Five players — 2008 winner Martin Kaymer and Marcel Siem of Germany, Tommy Fleetwood of England, Spains Miguel Angel Jimenez and Swedens Alex Noren — are three strokes off the pace to be tied for sixth. "The gap between Ernie and me, its shrank by one. Instead of four, its only three now," said Siem, who received great support from the appreciative crowd. "The people were super cool today." Els was behind Willett and Wiesberger by the time he teed off in the afternoon. Els began with five successive pars before holing his first birdie, but ran into trouble when he found water from the tee at the par-four No. 7 and needed six shots. After four more birdies, a bogey on No. 16 looked to have cost him the lead but he finished with a simple tap-in for another birdie. "I didnt feel a lot of energy today for some reason, especially on the front nine for the first 12 holes or so," Els said. "I dont know, maybe its the jet-lag or age or something. I made an absolute mess of two holes — 16 was just an absolute mess and seven! You take those really big mistakes away and then I had a really good round." Alex Okafor Super Bowl Jersey . LOUIS -- Heading into the final stretch of the season, the issues for the Chicago Bears banged-up defence only seem to be getting worse. Christian Okoye Super Bowl Jersey . Lack made 20 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Canucks blanked the St. Louis Blues 1-0 in the first post-Olympic game for both teams night. http://www.officialkcchiefspro.com/Darwin-thompson-chiefs-jersey/ . The Oilers come in having lost five in a row (0-4-1) and 16 of their last 20 games, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. LeSean McCoy Super Bowl Jersey . Three came down to the fourth quarter while quarterbacks continued to shine in all four games; so important to the overall quality of the game. Chad Henne Super Bowl Jersey . But what about the officials? Every sport has officials and they also have stories about hard work and sacrifice but their accomplishments are seldom recognized by anyone outside their inner circle. GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Dre Massey is Floridas most versatile player, capable of lining up at receiver, running back, quarterback, returner and punter. Yes, punter. The 25th-ranked Gators probably wont ask Massey to kick, but they do expect the junior college transfer to be a huge help on offense this season.Hes one of those guys that you can use in a lot of different situations, coach Jim McElwain said.Massey did it all at Holmes (Mississippi) Community College last year. He caught 21 passes for 548 yards and six touchdowns, and carried 59 times for 452 yards and three scores. He also punted three times (averaged 22.3 yards) and threw three passes (all incomplete).Florida isnt trying to pass Massey off as a modern-day Paul Hornung, but considering the Gators lack of offensive playmakers since Percy Harvin left school in 2009, its easy to understand their excitement. At the very least, Massey should give the Gators another viable receiving option alongside Antonio Callaway, Brandon Powell and C.J. Worton. But Massey also could end up in the starting lineup because Callaway hasnt been cleared to play following a university-imposed suspension and Worton is dealing with a high-ankle sprain. And if Masseys performance matches his confidence, hell be tough to take off the field. It will give (defenses) a headache trying to figure out what they can do to stop me, Massey said. Then well switch it up and do something different. Its what we do.Florida has been searching for more offense for years, ever since quarterback Tim Tebows tenure ended after the 2009 season with two national championships and about 20 school records. The Gators ranked 100th in the nation in scoring in 2015, averaging 23.dddddddddddd.2 points a game, and were 112th in total offense. They managed to win the Southeastern Conferences watered-down Eastern Division thanks mostly to a dynamic defense.McElwain vowed the offense will be dramatically better this year. His scheme is predicated on shifts and movements that are designed to create mismatches. Massey seems to be a perfect fit. The Greenville, South Carolina, native -- former Gamecocks coach and current Florida ambassador Steve Spurrier recruited him out of high school -- plays mostly in the slot, but can slide outside or line up in the backfield. And if the Gators want to get trickier, Massey can take snaps.McElwain even guaranteed that Massey would throw at least one pass this season.Theres the art of deception in having those guys being able to do so many different things, McElwain said. I think anytime you can do that, it really helps.McElwain wanted to use Powell in a similar role last season, but he was slowed by a foot injury. With Powell healthy and Massey in the mix, the Gators are planning to play them side by side.Thats some crazy matchup problems, Massey said. Theres really nothing you can do.The Gators hope thats the case. If so, there would be even less need for Massey to punt.Ive been pretty much versatile everywhere Ive played, said Massey, who once accounted for 11 touchdowns in a high school game. Ive always been able to do more than one thing and play more than one position. I take pride in that.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
