HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Mississippi State coach Vic Schaefer took a few minutes during the third quarter to give a spirited lecture to star guard Victoria Vivians as she sat on the bench following a few bad plays. There was really no need to hurry. Breanna Richardson made sure the Bulldogs would be just fine.Richardson scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead No. 5 Mississippi State over Southern Mississippi 72-50 on Saturday. The performance made for two special days in a row for Richardson.Im proud of that kid, Schaefer said. We were at graduation last night. She and I didnt roll in here until 12:30 this morning. For her to come back and play after graduating last night is kind of appropriate. She really played well -- aggressive and physical underneath.Chinwe Okorie added 18 points for the Bulldogs.Mississippi State (9-0) never trailed, jumping out to a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs exploited their considerable size advantage in the post during the early run, with the 6-foot-1 Richardson and 6-foot-5 Okorie converting easy opportunities.Southern Miss (7-2) cut the lead to single digits a few times in the second and third quarters, but couldnt hit enough shots to make things close. Brittanny Dinkins led the Golden Eagles with 18 points. We just couldnt ever get over that hump, Southern Miss coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. But Im proud of how we fought. Weve just got to sharpen up the mental side of it so when we play these types of teams we can overcome some frustration.Mississippi State won handily despite a subpar game from Vivians, who finished with 11 points on 5 of 15 shooting. Richardson was there to pick up the slack, shooting 7 of 9 from the field.I actually shocked myself, Richardson said. I honestly didnt know I had that many points and rebounds. I just came out, felt good, got into the rhythm of the game and played hard.SCHAEFER SCOLDS DEFENSESchaefer made it clear he was disappointed in the play of Morgan William, Roshunda Johnson and Vivians, the teams three starting guards, especially on the defensive end.Its the worst defensive team Ive ever had, Schaefer said. I know we held them to 50, but our lack of commitment defensively really irritates me.NO OUTSIDE SHOTMississippi State won despite just making 1 of 11 3-point attempts. Before Saturday, the fewest 3-pointers the Bulldogs had made in a game this season was two against Texas.BIG PICTUREMississippi State: The Bulldogs continue to plow through their nonconference schedule without a loss. This wasnt Mississippi States best performance -- especially by the guards -- but the team continues to find ways to score even when the outside shots arent falling.Southern Miss: The Golden Eagles have had a lot of success so far during nonconference play, but Mississippi State was a huge step up in competition. Southern Miss had solid guard play for most of the game, but couldnt keep the Bulldogs from getting easy inside looks.UP NEXTMississippi State: The Bulldogs travel to play Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday.Southern Miss: Southern Miss is off for more than a week before playing California in the Puerto Rico Classic on Dec. 19. The nine-time Big 12 champion Jayhawks are positioning themselves for another title, as they have run out to a flawless 6-0 mark in conference play thus far. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The overhaul is complete. The pieces are in place. And for the first time in years, there are expectations for the Jacksonville Jaguars. It might not be playoffs or bust in Jacksonville, but losing double-digit games is no longer acceptable. The Jaguars spent the last four years rebuilding the roster, growing it mostly through the draft, and then supplemented the makeover by spending more than $350 million (nearly $150 million guaranteed) in free agency the last two years to sign 10 starters. Now, general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley believe they have a team capable of winning every week and competing for the AFC South title. Its a welcome feeling for a franchise that is an NFL-worst 19-61 since 2010.Its kind of cool because theres a lot of hype and stuff in the community, quarterback Blake Bortles said. But when you walk in the building, it kind of just stops. The noise stops because everybody in the building knows what our goal is and how were going to go about doing it.Jacksonville hasnt won more than five games in any of the last five years, the kind of consistent losing that leaves fans screaming for change and management often responding. But Jaguars owner Shad Khan has been patient during the restoration process. He even gave Bradley and his assistants one-year extensions in January, keeping them under contract through 2017.Although Khan has declined to put a number on how many games Bradley must win to stick around beyond 2016, he said a winning record is everybodys reasonable expectation at this point. The Jaguars seemingly -- finally -- have the talent to make it a reality. The expectations in this building are what we had hoped for, Bradley said. To keep building the roster through the draft, add some free agents to our current roster and wed feel like our roster would keep getting better and better with each year that weve been doing it. And were to this point right now.To me, its great. This is what wed hoped for, that youd say, `Hey, this is a good roster. And the expectations, well, thats what we had planned. When we put this thing together, we felt like at this time, this is the type of roster that wed have, so its a good thing. Here are some other things to know about the Jaguars heading into training camp:DEFENSIVE TURNAROUNND: After ranking near the bottom of the league in nearly every defensive category last season, Bradley fired coordinator Bob Babich and promoted longtime assistant Todd Wash to run the unit.dddddddddddd Wash will have several new faces to work with. The Jags signed defensive tackle Malik Jackson, free safety Tashaun Gipson and cornerback Prince Amukamara in free agency. Throw in the return of defensive end Dante Fowler, who missed his rookie season because of a knee injury, and the addition of highly touted rookies Jalen Ramsey and Miles Jack, and Jacksonville could have six or more new starters on that side of the ball.OFFENSIVE BREAKOUT: Bortles had a breakout season in 2015, throwing 35 touchdown passes and running for two more scores. But his 18 interceptions and 51 sacks led the league, leaving plenty of room for improvement. Bortles has one of the best receiver tandems (Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns) in the league, and his supporting cast should be better this season. The teams best offensive lineman, Brandon Linder, returns from injury, and the Jags signed veteran offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum to beef up Bortles blind side. Tight end Julius Thomas is fully recovered from a broken hand, and free agent running back Chris Ivory should provide an upgrade in short-yardage and goal-line situations.WOE LINE: The Jaguars are counting on Linder and Beachum to drastically improve one of the leagues worst offensive lines. Bortles has been sacked 106 times in two years, the most in NFL history over any two-year period. Linder is moving from guard to center, and Beachum, who is recovering from a knee injury, will compete with Luke Joeckel at left tackle. The loser likely will slide to left guard.TOUGH START: The NFL schedule makers seemingly did the Jaguars no favors with the early slate. Jacksonville opens at home against Green Bay, travels cross-country to play San Diego and then hosts Baltimore before traveling to London to face perennial division heavyweight Indianapolis. The Jaguars are 1-10 in September under Bradley and just 3-20 in the first two months of the season since 2012.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
