BROSSARD, Que. -- The Montreal Canadiens tried to focus on the positive on Saturday after a roller-coaster season that saw the team finish a surprising second in the Eastern Conference, then quickly bow out in the playoffs. Despite getting knocked out by the Ottawa Senators in five games, Habs players said there is much to build on for next year with a strong core group and the emergence of youngsters like Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk. Gallagher is nominated for the Calder Trophy for best rookie. Galchenyuk, only 19, showed flashes of brilliance in his first year. P.K. Subban, meanwhile, is nominated for the Norris Trophy for best defenceman. "Weve got some great young talent," said veteran defenceman Josh Gorges, as the Canadiens met the media for a final time this season at their practice facility in Brossard, Que. "Weve gotta make sure that we really learn from this year and we keep growing, and then next year well have to pull it together." First, though, many of the Habs will need to set aside some time to heal. The team offered up more information on Saturday about the injuries that piled up during its short playoff stint. Ryan White said he punctured a lung during Game 3 of the series, while Francis Bouillon revealed he was playing with a broken finger suffered in an April 11 fight against the Buffalo Sabres Steve Ott. Forward Brandon Prust hurt his ribs in Game 4 against the Senators and will undergo an MRI on his shoulder in the coming days. Goaltender Carey Price suffered a sprained MCL in his knee in Game 4, which will take about six weeks to recover. Its the second year in a row that Price has finished the season with an injury. Last year he sat out with a concussion. Price became a lightning rod for criticism as he slumped through the final weeks of the season and admitted it was a challenge to take on the Sens hot-handed goalie Craig Anderson. "The way it ended leaves a bad taste in your mouth," Price said. "Well just have to use that motivation to make bigger strides next year." Price said he wants to come back stronger next year, with his eye on earning a spot on the Canadian Olympic team in Sochi, Russia. "Theres a lot of positives to take out of this season," Price said. "We want to find the areas we need to improve to make this team a champion." For now, Habs players will seek out glory at the international level. Several Habs are joining their national teams at the World Championships underway in Sweden. Galchenyuk will play for the United States and Tomas Plekanec will play for the Czech Republic, while Raphael Diaz plans to join the Swiss team once he gets a green light from the Habs medical staff. Subban hasnt received a call to join Team Canada. General manager Steve Yzerman has said he doesnt plan to add more players to the team. After missing the start of the season before signing a two-year, $5.75-million contract, Subban attributed his own strong year to the teams improved play. "I think you see individual success when you focus on the team," he said. "When a team goes from 15th place to second in the conference its not because one guy or two guys. "Everybody was on the same page." Meanwhile, Lars Eller, who left Game 1 on a stretcher after an illegal hit to the head from Eric Gryba, said hes had no symptoms for three or four days. Eller said hell be ready for next season. He rejected any suggestion the Habs need to get bigger to compete in the playoffs against teams like the Sens or Boston Bruins. "I dont think you need clear-cut heavyweight fighters or anything like that," Eller said. "I think most of all you need good hockey players and people to have the right attitude, the desire to win." MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impact are hoping to ride a hot streak all the way to a second Amway Canadian Championship. The Impact will host the Vancouver Whitecaps in Wednesday nights first leg of the two-game, total-goals final at Saputo Stadium. Montreal, which won the first ACC title in 2008, bounced back from a 2-0 loss in Toronto on April 24 with a shocking 6-0 win at home one week later for a spot in this years final. Impact goalie Evan Bush, who backs up Troy Perkins in Montreals Major League Soccer games, will once again get the start against Vancouver after he helped unseat the four-time defending Voyageur Cup champion Reds. "He works hard every day," Impact coach Marco Schallibaum said. "Its not a present. He merits these games in the Canadian cup." Montreal fans were upset with the Impacts outing in their first game of this years ACC competition at BMO Field. "We went back after and we looked at it and said it was just a bad performance," Bush said after practice Tuesday. "You know, a lot of the same guys played the next game against Toronto. It just so happened we didnt play very well in Toronto. "We came back and we were focused. Youre not always going to win 6-0 but throughout the course of the season weve put together some good games. I dont know if that game necessarily was a statement game but it was an emotional game for everybody at the stadium and within the team it gives us a lot of confidence going into this next leg here." The Impact are coming off a spectacular 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Italian defender Matteo Ferrari scored his first MLS goal off a corner kick in injury time after he was charged with an own-goal that gave Salt Lake an early lead. That win left Montreal tied with Kansas City and Houston for second in the Eastern Conference with 20 points, one point behind New York. The Impact are 4-0-1 at home with a fifth win coming in the second leg of the ACC against Toronto on May 1. "You see the importance of a home game," Bush said. "Last time against Toronto they did what they needed to do in a home game. They put a lot of pressure on us. We responded with the way we did but we dont want to dig ourselves a hole and have to go to Vancouver and make uup a goal differential so were looking to get off on a good foot here and make a good result tomorrow.dddddddddddd" Montreal will be playing its seventh game in 22 days, including its third in ACC competition. "Its nice to be at home knowing that we can prepare and were here, having played a lot of games, we dont have to travel all the way to the West Coast," said Impact midfielder Patrice Bernier, a native of Brossard, Que. "That helps that we have just played at home and were already settled in here." Bernier acknowledged that hosting the opening leg puts pressure on Montreal to come out strong. "Were going to play for a good result," Bernier said. "Hopefully we have no goals against and we have a few goals in the bank but we have to be smart. We know that its a two-leg series so we dont want to go there giving something that gives them a little bit more boost knowing that they have an away goal or something like that. Were going to try to get the best result possible that puts us a little bit one step in the door in the second leg." The Whitecaps, runners-up to Toronto in each of the last four ACC tournaments, also find themselves coming into the final on a high note as they get ready to face a new opponent for the Canadian title. Vancouver beat Los Angeles 3-1 on Saturday for its first-ever win over the Galaxy. The Whitecaps, who won both legs of its ACC semi-final against FC Edmonton, are currently seventh in the MLS Western Conference with a 3-4-3 mark. They will host the second leg of the ACC final at B.C. Place on May 29. Midfielder Russell Teibert of Niagara Falls, Ont., scored his first two MLS goals in the victory over Los Angeles. He said the Whitecaps have to use that momentum to help them excel against Montreal, and that given Vancouvers struggles in Canadian championship play the past two years all of the Whitecaps will be "pumped up and ready to play" the Impact. "It is a very big game, Canadian championship, and we do want to be the best team in Canada," Teibert said. "So we need to take (the win over L.A.) forward and build off it. "Everybody on our team wants to dedicate (a Canadian title) to our club and our fans. We do owe it to them." ' ' '
