KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- Waves, wind and darkness hampered the ocean search off Hawaii for a Chinese man reported missing while attempting to set a sailing record, the U.S. Coast Guard pilot who was the missions air commander said Thursday.It was pretty frustrating not to find him, not to hear him, Lt. Ben Powers said at Air Station Barbers Point in west Oahu, the morning after the Coast Guard called off its search for Guo Chuan. The hardest thing we do is search for a person in the water because its a huge ocean.Chuan, 50, was attempting to set a sailing record from San Francisco to Shanghai. The search was suspended after a U.S. Navy crew from the USS Makin Island went aboard Guos 97-foot trimaran about 620 miles northwest of Oahu and found only his life jacket.As one of the pilots of one of the HC-130 Hercules planes that participated in the search, Powers spent hours scanning the ocean for Guo through 4-to-6-foot waves. There was no moon, he said, so illumination was low even with night-vision goggles.Rescuers radioed Guo every 15 to 30 minutes, Powers said. There was no response.When the persons in the water basically the only thing above the water is the persons head, Powers said. So thats really what were looking for -- something the size of a human head from an aircraft from 300 to 700 feet.Because Guos boat was well-tracked, rescuers had a good idea where he fell into the water, Powers said.Guo was a professional mariner with a deep passion for sailing. The current speed record for that journey is 21 days, and he was trying to sail from San Francisco to Shanghai within 20 days, the website says.In Beijing, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Chinas consulate general in Los Angeles had alerted the U.S. Coast Guard in Hawaii when it learned that Guo could not be reached. And given Montreals quick turnaround, interim head coach Popp is assuming all eight wont suit up against B.C. (5-2). "Guys were getting MRIs, seeing doctors (Monday) and (Tuesday) they sit down and get the final word of where they are but we cant wait on that," the Alouettes general manager said in a telephone interview. "Weve had to move forward as though all eight arent playing and if you get one or two back, then great. "But weve had to go into the thinking mode that were not going to have them and move forward." Calvillo, who will celebrate his 41st birthday Friday, was injured in the first half after taking a hard hit from Saskatchewan defensive end Ricky Foley. Pro footballs all-time passing leader had completed four-of-eight passes for 85 yards at the time with Montreal (2-5) trailing 7-3. "We planned last week that wed play both if it came down to that and we ended up not because Josh handled it fairly well," Popp said. "Hes the more experienced guy and hes looked good in practice but we could very easily see both of them if Anthony doesnt play." Trouble is, Calvillo wasnt the only Alouette hurt in Regina. But thats everybodys problem, not just ours." Popp said London is definitely recovering from a concussion and wont play against the Lions.
