NEW YORK -- A.J. Ellis didnt wait long to endear himself to the Philadelphia Phillies. All he needed was three at-bats.Ellis got a big hit in his Philadelphia debut, breaking a seventh-inning tie with a two-run double Sunday that sent the Phillies to a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets.Philadelphia salvaged the series finale after getting outscored 21-5 in the first two games.Regardless of whats happened the last four days, it feels good to drive in runs, Ellis said. It feels good to help put your team ahead and contribute to a team win.Ellis was acquired Thursday from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for longtime Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz. The veteran backstop, the longest-tenured Dodgers player in the organization at the time of the deal, arrived Saturday and started getting to know his new teammates and pitching staff. We heard about his disappointment in L.A., but the minute he got here and I talked to him, he put it behind him, he was fine, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. It was great to see him get that big hit, for himself and for the team. Im sure he feels more comfortable now.Ellis didnt just help at the plate. He guided young starter Vince Velasquez and four relievers as they quieted a streaking Mets lineup that was minus ailing sluggers Yoenis Cespedes (quad) and Neil Walker (back). It was a lot more fun catching those guys than hitting against them, Ellis joked.New York also lost shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera in the first inning. He exited with soreness in his left knee, a problem area that sidelined him twice earlier this year.Mets manager Terry Collins indicated that his three injured players might require daily checkups for the remainder of the season.Well have to continue to monitor how they feel each day, he said. But with the way all of a sudden weve played here in the last four or five days, it took a little air out of the balloon. The score was 1-all in the seventh when Philadelphia loaded the bases with nobody out on singles by Tommy Joseph, Aaron Altherr and Jimmy Paredes off Robert Gsellman (1-1), who was very effective to that point in his first major league start.Hansel Robles came on in relief and Ellis drove the right-handers fourth pitch over Curtis Grandersons head in left field, scoring Joseph and Altherr with his first hit for his new team.Ellis struck out and grounded out in his first two at-bats.Pinch-hitter Peter Bourjos was hit by a pitch from Robles with the bases loaded, forcing in another run.Cesar Hernandez added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.David Hernandez (3-3) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.Philadelphia squandered two chances to score early in the game, when Freddy Galvis was thrown out at home on a failed squeeze attempt and Altherr was cut down at the plate on Paredes fourth-inning RBI double.Velasquez allowed five hits in five innings while striking out seven. The 24-year-old right-hander had struggled of late, allowing 19 runs and 25 hits over his previous 16 1/3 innings. But he improved on his success against the Mets, lowering his ERA versus New York to 1.76 (three earned runs in 15 1/3 innings).Talking to A.J. when he got here, and just today before the outing, he was like, `Just trust your stuff, Velasquez said.Philadelphia had lost the previous seven games Velasquez started, dating to July 19.At (24) years old, hes got a lot to learn, but hes got the stuff to be really good, Mackanin said. The Mets entered having scored 31 runs over their last three games, including three homers by Cabrera during that span.TRAINERS ROOMPhillies: Bourjos was hit by a 97 mph fastball on the left wrist. After crouching down in pain behind home plate, he went to first base.Mets: LHP Steven Matz (shoulder) threw a bullpen and is expected to throw another one before coming off the disabled list to start Thursday against Miami rather than Wednesday, Collins said.UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Jake Thompson (1-3, 9.78 ERA) opens a three-game series against NL East-leading Washington, his fifth major league start. Hes failed to reach the sixth inning in any of his previous four. Tanner Roark (13-7, 2.99 ERA) pitches for the Nationals.Mets: RHP Rafael Montero (0-0, 11.57 ERA) has the difficult task of facing All-Star RHP Jose Fernandez (13-7, 2.91) in his first big league start of the season as the Mets begin an important four-game series with Miami at Citi Field. Montero will be recalled from Double-A Binghamton on Monday and last pitched in the majors on April 19. He struggled at Triple-A Las Vegas, but had a 1.70 ERA in eight starts at Binghamton. The answer was always going to be no, but he was certainly up for the challenge, bringing his coaching staff in to show us what a standard training session is like. I was tagging along with a five-a-side team, led by Clarets fan Sam, who described his greatest footballing achievement as topping the scoring charts in his schools year six tournament. The team had been handed the chance to train with Dyche as part of Football League sponsor Sky Bets Who? What? Where? campaign, which gives fans the chance to meet their heroes.Heres how our day panned out...Meeting the gaffer Sean Dyche put on a coaching session for amateur footballers We were warmly welcomed at Burnleys Gawthorpe Hall training ground and sent to get changed and await the arrival of our manager for the day.Dyche had been training the first team in the morning before fulfilling his press commitments, which included an interview with Sky Sports News HQ as he collected his Sky Bet Manager of the Month award. The league leaders are unbeaten in 2016 and flying high at the top of the Sky Bet Championship, so we were hopeful that Dyche would go easy on us.Any preconceptions of him being a leader that rules with fear were quickly set to bed as he greeted us warmly and it quickly became apparent that his philosophy was to optimise potential by getting willing workers play with the belief. The warm-up The Burnley manager shows his lighter side The most important part of the session, as one of the less athletically equipped players was to find out. After a brief jog, we were put through various loosening drills, the majority of which were with the ball at our feet.Mark Howard, head of sport science, explained how the focus was on dynamic stretches, replicating and preparing our bodies for the actions wed be putting into practice.Sprints and more sprints Sprint drills push some beyond their limits The fitness drill was fairly simple, with the key being to ensure we began our sprints from a light jog. The runs were approximately 40 metres, with a five-second light jog between each one, repeated eight times. We managed the first set quite comfortably but the second round had a victim, with Davo pulling a hamstring.I could feel mine tightening towards the end and was relieved when our fitness expert said wed give the third round, which the first team usually do, a miss. Polishing technique Ian Woan sets up a touch, pass and move drill We then moved on to some control and pass drills under the guidance of Nottingham Forest legend Ian Woan.dddddddddddd The initial drill was in pairs, with one player supplying the ball via an underarm throw and the other attempting to control the ball and return to source. The manikins were introduced for the next exercise, which we were informed play a big role in Arsene Wengers training sessions, perhaps explaining the clubs marking of Andy Carroll at the weekend.Positioned in triangles, we had to receive the ball to the left of the marker and return to the oncoming supplier, spin round and collect it again from the right of the manikin, and take it on to the one to the right. Simple right? Wrong, especially once you throw two balls into the mix. Finishing practiceAfter watching us struggling to out-manoeuvre Burnleys best manikins, it was time to see whether we could beat their Under-21 goalkeeper Danijel Nizic. The move was a simple one; pass it into Dyche, latch onto the one-two and beat the goalkeeper. The gaffer wasnt in the business of making it any easier though, demanding pace on the supply and popping up a few passes. The Burnley boss comforts his young goalkeeper However, we had a player capable of making it look easy. Jordan Rhodes cousin was on hand to show that genetics might be the most important ingredient, producing a chip worthy of any division, leaving Burnleys Under-21 goalkeeper seated and red-faced.To the relief of the young Aussie stopper, the Sky Sports News cameraman had chosen that very moment to reposition himself, missing the rare moment of brilliance. The matchWe finished with a three-touch six-a-side game with Woan explaining that most of the time, the right option is the first one you see. After drawing the first five-minute game 4-4, we were given freedom to have as many touches as we wanted in the second and our team, carrying the hamstring-hampered Davo, were eventually exposed, going down 8-6, resulting in Dyches forfeit rule coming our way. Sean Dyche shows hes a hands-on manager The punishment? Ear flicks. Five on each ear. Not the glamour of professional football we had imagined, but another example of the grounded environment created by Dyche.Sean Dyches training session was arranged by Football League sponsor Sky Bet as part of the Who? What? Where? initiative, where fans can request their perfect day with their footballing hero. Find out more here. Also See: Championship video Championship Table Live on Sky Get Sky Sports ' ' '
