SAN DIEGO -- Theyre still the San Diego Chargers, at least for four more home games.Beyond that, the Chargers are uncertain about their future home. At least its not as hyper-hot as last year, when ownership was working with the rival Oakland Raiders on a plan for a stadium in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson. That plan was rejected by NFL owners, who nonetheless gave the Chargers the option to join the Rams in a stadium in Inglewood scheduled to open in 2019.The Chargers then spent most of this year campaigning for a measure that would raise $1.15 billion for a $1.8 billion stadium and convention center annex in downtown San Diego that would replace aging Qualcomm Stadium. All the while, they reminded everyone that they hold the option to move to L.A.Voters called their bluff, voting it down 57-43. It needed 66.7 percent to pass.Chargers chairman Dean Spanos said hell consider his options but wont announce a decision until after the season.Interestingly enough, their first game since Election Day is at home against the Miami Dolphins. The Chargers beat the Dolphins on Dec. 20 on an emotional day in which fans thought they were seeing their beloved Bolts in San Diego for the final time.Quarterback Philip Rivers said hes optimistic enough groundwork has been laid for the team and city to eventually agree to a stadium deal. The love from team to the city and the city to the team has been awesome over the last 55 years and the last 13 Ive been here, Rivers said. I cant see us not here. We have four of our last seven at home and a chance to bounce back and get back in the thick of it, and hopefully we can have some exciting home-field advantage type of atmosphere games down the stretch. Here are some things to look for when the Chargers (4-5) host the Dolphins (4-4):MOO: Being from Wisconsin, Chargers second-year running back Melvin Gordon is OK with coach Mike McCoy referring to him as a bell cow after he went off for a career-high 196 yards on 32 carries and his NFL-leading 11th touchdown in a home victory against Tennessee. He also caught four passes for 65 yards.I mean, its cool, Gordon said. Its all right. I like it, I guess. You hear it a lot at Wisconsin, going there.Gordon is running hard and quickly making people forget his miserable rookie season. Hes run for 768 yards and nine touchdowns, with two receiving TDs.Gordon became the bell cow after Danny Woodhead was lost to a knee injury in the second game.Mores been put on his shoulders. Hes played more snaps and had a lot more carries, Rivers said. You dont want to run him down, but at the same time the way hes going, you want to give it to him as much as he can. I dont think its a deal where hes going to get it handed to him 30 times, but were going to need him to keep running the way hes running, because when were able to be that balanced and have those type of drives, it makes us that much better.ANOTHER RUNNER: Miamis Jay Ajayi has rushed for 100-plus yards in three consecutive games, including two straight 200-yard games The last Dolphins running back who had three or more consecutive games with 100-plus yards was Reggie Bush, who had four straight in 2011.Ajayis 529 yards in those three games are third most in team history behind Ricky Williams, who rushed for 587 and 545 yards in two three-game stretches in 2002.OPENING HOLES: Dolphins center Mike Pouncey reached the second level to block a linebacker and seal off a lane for a 20-yard touchdown run by Ajayi. Thats just one small example of the job the offensive line has done to pave the way for the Dolphins recent turnaround.Youve got four guys who can play left tackle, and youve got probably the best center in football, in my eyes, Branden Albert said. Our talent and our experience is helping us out.Albert is the starting left tackle, but left guard Laremy Tunsil, right guard Jermon Bushrod and right tackle JaWuan James all have experience at left tackle.DEEP IN RETURNERS: Darren Rizzi is in his eighth year as the Dolphins special teams coordinator, and hes never enjoyed so much depth among his returners.Rookie Kenyan Drake ran back a kickoff 96 yards for the winning touchdown last Sunday against the Jets. Jakeem Grant scored on a 74-yard punt return in Week 5. Jarvis Landry is averaging 11.1 yards on punt returns. Its a good problem to have, Rizzi said. For a special teams coach to have options back there where youre not just a one-trick pony, it really helps you. This is the first time in eight years weve had this many guys Id feel comfortable putting back there.GATES WATCH: San Diego star Antonio Gates is three touchdown catches shy of matching Tony Gonzalezs NFL record for a tight end (111). American Kevin Streelman was in second place after shooting a 69.DETROIT -- Matt Boyd is more focused on the present than the future. The young left-hander is making a strong case to be counted on for inclusion in the Detroit Tigers 2017 rotation. He understands that goal can best be served by pitching well enough to remain a Detroit starter through the end of the season, which so far he has done exceedingly well.Boyd (5-2, 3.98 ERA) starts Monday night against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park in the opening of a three-game series. Detroit holds an 8-5 edge over Chicago so far. When you start looking within your division, we havent played (that well), White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. You have to be able to reverse that, find a way to be able to win those games.Games like (Saturday night, 9-3 win over Seattle) can help. But you want to be able to do that within your division. We have some tough teams within the division as well, teams that can pitch, and Detroit, offensively, thats a tough team. You have to be able to stop them and you have to be able to score just like they do.Boyd has allowed three runs or less in each of his last eight starts, going 5-0 with a 2.38 ERA since July 9. Boyd has started twice against the White Sox this season, the only times he has faced them, without a decision and a 7.27 ERA.Hell be tasked with stopping a two-game Detroit slide that followed a five-game winning streak as the Tigers lost to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, 5-0.Boyd, Daniel Norris and Michael Fulmer give Detroit three young pitchers in their rotation and the trio do their workouts together, dissect their performances with one another and push one another to exceed expectations. While those three might get pushed back in the Tigers rotation after Thursdays day off, Wednesdays starter, Justin Verlander, is probable to pitch in turn through Septembber.ddddddddddddIf the team wants me to go on regular rest, Verlander said, I think thats a big benefit of having a guy thats been a workhorse for a long time. Im going to be honest with Brad and tell him if Im good to go or not.Im happy to do it. As long as I feel stay feeling good, Im good to go.The White Sox have veteran James Shields (5-16, 5.98 ERA) set for the opener. His ERA with Chicago is 7.49 in 15 starts but for August its 13.95 in five outings. Hes faced the Tigers three times this season, going 0-2 with a 7.88 ERA.The right-hander has had mixed results against Detroit over the years. In 22 starts, he is 7-8 with a 4.53 ERA.The White Sox have been looking at the future since the All-Star break, if not before. On Friday they traded catcher Dioner Navarro to Toronto in exchange for a young minor league left-hander, Colton Turner. The White Sox activated former Tiger Alex Avila from the disabled list but instead of backing up Navarro, Avila will be behind Omar Narvaez. As we talked about, Chicago GM Rick Hahn said. Omar has done a nice job putting himself on the map playing a role here over the next few years. And this should likely give him a few more opportunities over the next four or five weeks to play on a regular basis.Chicago will bring up a third catcher for flexibility when rosters expand but he isnt likely to get many looks. There are some options in the pipeline, Hahn said. But certainly heading into this offseason, we are going to find a direction for 2017 and some answers for 2017 behind the plate.Chicago has lefty Chris Sale lined up to face Verlander in the series closeout Wednesday. He has thrown 120 pitches in each of his last two starts.
